To foster community integration ahead of the 33rd APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting, to be held in Shenzhen in November, Pingshan Subdistrict organized a hiking and plant-rubbing event at Maluan Mountain Country Park on May 23.
Dozens of international and local residents set off along the Biling Waterfall trail. They paused frequently to take photos and admire the lush greenery surrounding them. “Every step brings different bird songs and flowers,” said a French resident.

During the plant-rubbing session, participants strictly followed the “no picking, no damage” rule by using fallen leaves and petals for their artworks. With every tap and press, the textures of Pingshan’s plants intertwined with cultural elements from around the world.
The event combined nature, creativity, and cross-cultural connection — capturing the APEC spirit of openness and mutual learning. Many participants described it as a fun and welcoming way to bond with neighbors.

“I’ve made many friends and feel more integrated into the community,” said Severin from Benin. “I want to thank the Pingshan International Volunteer Team for helping foreigners adapt to life here.”
Pingshan Subdistrict will continue to roll out more activities to build an inclusive and friendly international community.
